Eligibility Criteria for Temporary Resident Visas

To be eligible to apply for the Temporary Resident visas for Canada, you must be able to fulfill the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old to apply as the primary visa applicant.
  • Have a valid governmental issued passport with at least one blank page that is not the last page of the passport.
  • Translate and certify all the documents that you have that are in another language other than English or French.
  • Have a clean criminal history and submit court or police documents to prove it.
  • Be ready to pay the necessary visa application fees and visa processing fees.
  • Sign and date the appropriate documents where necessary.
  • Fill and sign a Visa Application Center (VAC) Consent Form.
  • Submit copies of your current immigration status in another country or in Canada.
  • Have enough funds to cover your stay in Canada.
  • Be ready to attend an interview or give bio-metric information.
  • Go through a medical examination if the Canadian Consulate asks you to.
  • Prove that your stay in Canada is temporary and that you will return to your home country once your visit is over.
  • You must prove that you do not plan to work or study in Canada.

Canadian citizens have the right to enter Canada freely. However, visitors to Canada, including tourists, students, and workers, may need a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada.

No. Citizens from visa-exempt countries do not need a Temporary Resident Visa to visit Canada. Citizens from all other countries must apply for a TRV before entering Canada.

Not always. If your studies will last less than 6 months in Canada, then a Study Permit is usually not required. Any study extending beyond  6 months will typically require a Study Permit.

Side Note: Irrespective of your reason to come to Canada, if you are a non-Canadian citizen,  you must satisfy a visa officer that your intention in coming to Canada is temporary and that you will leave upon the expiry of your temporary status. Most times, you are required to show  sufficient ties to your home country and that you are able to financially support yourself during your visit.
